Comix Zone Cheat Codes & Secrets

Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Comix Zone (1995).

Stage Select & Invincibility (Jukebox Method)

Comix Zone’s most powerful cheat is accessed through the Options menu’s built-in Jukebox. This single sequence unlocks both a stage select and full invincibility.

How to enter:

  1. From the title screen, press Start to access the main menu
  2. Select Options
  3. Navigate to the Jukebox (Sound Test)
  4. Play the following tracks in exact order by highlighting each number and pressing C (or A/B to confirm):
Track OrderTrack Number
1st14
2nd15
3rd18
4th5
5th13
6th1
7th3
8th18
9th15
10th6

If entered correctly, the game will play an audio confirmation: “Oh Yeah!” — the voice of Sketch Turner. Return to the main menu and start a new game; a Stage Select screen will appear, letting you begin on any of the six episodes. Invincibility is active for the duration of that run.

Emulator note: This code works identically in Genesis/Mega Drive emulators. If the confirmation sound doesn’t trigger, make sure you’re selecting each track number and letting it begin playing before moving to the next — some emulators require a brief pause between inputs.

Episode & Stage Structure

Comix Zone has no traditional password system. The game is structured into 3 Episodes, each split into 2 Pages (panels), for 6 total stages. There are no between-session passwords — it’s designed as a single-session challenge. The Jukebox stage select above is the only legitimate way to jump to a specific episode.

Stage Select OptionEpisodeDescription

Episode 3, Page 13-1Curse of the Dead Ships
Episode 3, Page 23-2Curse of the Dead Ships (cont.)

Alternate Path Selection (Episode 1)

At the end of Episode 1, Page 1, Sketch faces a panel fork — two doors lead to different paths through the comic. This is not a cheat, but it’s the game’s closest equivalent to a branching level select, and knowing which fork is easier changes survival odds significantly.

ChoicePathDifficulty
Left doorShorter route with fewer enemiesEasier
Right doorLonger route with more hazards and enemiesHarder

The left path is universally recommended for first playthroughs. Both routes converge at Episode 2.

Roadkill (Rat) Exploits

Sketch’s rat companion Roadkill is a massively underused tool. Pressing B while crouching sends Roadkill running ahead to scout. The key exploit:

Bomb delivery via Roadkill: When you have a bomb item in your inventory, you can command Roadkill to carry it directly into a cluster of enemies. This bypasses the need to engage in melee and conserves health — the most precious resource in the game since there are no continues.

  • Hold Down + B to send Roadkill forward with an equipped bomb
  • Time this when enemies are grouped in the next panel to the right
  • Roadkill returns after delivery; he cannot die from the explosion

Health Management Exploits

Comix Zone has no extra lives and no continues in standard play. Every point of health matters. These exploits help stretch survivability:

Panel-ripping cost avoidance: Sketch can tear through comic panels to move between areas, but this costs health (approximately half a bar per tear). You can avoid this cost by luring enemies to destroy panels for you — some enemy attacks will break panel borders. Bait the attack, let the panel break, then pass through for free.

Object order manipulation: Many destructible objects in the environment contain hidden items (health power-ups, weapons, Roadkill upgrades). Breaking objects in a specific order matters — the game randomizes some item drops, but health vials tend to appear in the second or third object broken in a given panel. Save at least one heavy-hitting attack for object destruction rather than enemies.

Spiked panel avoidance: In Episode 2 onward, some panel transitions have spike borders. Crouching and moving slowly through the transition hitbox rather than walking at full speed can sometimes clip through the spike damage frames, though this is inconsistent across cartridge revisions.

Sega Channel Exclusive Episode

Comix Zone originally shipped with Episode Z: Danger in the Danger Zone accessible only through the Sega Channel subscription service (a 1990s cable delivery service for Genesis games). This bonus episode featured additional content and a slightly modified difficulty curve unavailable on retail cartridges.

This content was not recoverable through any cartridge cheat. It exists only in Sega Channel broadcast archives and has been documented by preservation communities, but no ROM of it circulates as of the game’s original release window. The Sega Genesis Mini (2019) re-release did not include this content.

Developer Easter Eggs

Hidden Credits Reference: The Jukebox track numbers in the invincibility code (14, 15, 18, 5, 13, 1, 3, 18, 15, 6) are widely believed by the fan community to spell out a message in alphanumeric substitution (N-O-R-M-A-C-R-O-F-T — a reference to Norm Arocena, though the exact attribution varies by source). Whether intentional or fan-interpreted, the sequence was clearly hand-chosen rather than arbitrary.

Sketch’s Comic Pages: The background art in several panels contains what appear to be readable text fragments and in-jokes from the Sega Technical Institute development team, visible if emulator screenshots are taken and zoomed. These include partial names and initials embedded in background graffiti in Episode 2.

Known Beneficial Glitches

Enemy stun-lock: Many standard enemies can be caught in a repeating stun animation if hit with a standing punch immediately as they recover. Timing the punch to land on frame 1 of their stand-up animation resets the stun — effectively looping them indefinitely without taking return damage. This works most reliably on the Psycho Mutant enemies in Episode 1.

Panel corner clipping: In rare cases, walking into the upper corner seam of a panel border while an enemy is attacking can cause Sketch to slide partially into the next panel, making him temporarily invulnerable to that attack. This is frame-dependent and not consistent, but speedrunners use it to absorb hits from bosses without taking damage on specific Genesis revisions (VA3 board revision is most reliable for this).

Boss repeat vulnerability: Both Episode 1 and Episode 3 bosses have a consistent vulnerability window immediately after their third attack in a cycle. The attack pattern does not vary, so memorizing the three-hit sequence and landing a full combo during that window deals double the expected damage due to a hit-detection overlap in their hurt boxes.
