Double Dragon Cheat Codes & Secrets

Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Double Dragon (1988).

Move Progression System (Hidden Unlock Mechanic)

Double Dragon NES uses an experience-based move unlocking system that functions as a hidden progression layer most players miss. Billy Lee begins the game with only basic punches and kicks. As you accumulate points by defeating enemies, new techniques unlock automatically — no codes required, but knowing the thresholds gives you a strategic advantage.

Points ThresholdMove UnlockedInput
StartingPunch, KickB (punch), A (kick)
~1,000 ptsHair Pull / GrabWalk into enemy, B
~3,000 ptsElbow SmashBack + B (while walking forward)
~5,000 ptsHeadbuttHold enemy + B
~7,000 ptsJump KickJump + A
~9,000 ptsSpinning Cyclone KickJump + B near enemy
~12,000 ptsUppercutBack + A

Farming early enemies in Mission 1 before advancing is the fastest way to unlock the full moveset before the difficulty escalates.

Elbow Smash Exploit

The Elbow Smash is the single most broken move in the game. Once unlocked, it hits enemies into a stun animation, interrupting virtually every attack. Most bosses can be defeated almost without taking damage by standing at close range and repeatedly inputting Back + B. This works on:

  • Abobo (both encounters)
  • Linda (all variants)
  • Jeff (Mission 3)
  • Machine Gun Willy (final boss) — walk up close immediately, spam elbow before he can fire

The game’s hitbox detection does not protect bosses from this move’s priority, making it the dominant strategy throughout all four missions.

Infinite Lives Farming

Mission 1 Enemy Respawn Loop

Near the start of Mission 1, two enemies spawn in fixed positions. If you defeat them without scrolling the screen past their spawn point, they will respawn. Repeat the kills to stack lives rapidly before moving forward. This is the fastest lives-farming location in the game.

Williams Brothers Trick (Mission 4)

Two Williams brothers appear guarding the final area of Mission 4. Each kill awards significant points. If you maneuver carefully to keep the screen from locking into the boss trigger zone, you can repeatedly bait and defeat Williams brothers for extra lives before taking on Willy.

Two-Player Secrets and the Hidden Ending

Simultaneous Two-Player Mode

Unlike the arcade original, the NES port supports true simultaneous two-player co-op. Player 1 controls Billy Lee; Player 2 controls Jimmy Lee. Both players share the same screen with independent life counters.

Secret vs. Ending (Two-Player Only)

Completing the game in two-player mode triggers a hidden battle not present in single-player. After defeating Machine Gun Willy and rescuing Marian, the game does not end — instead, the two players are forced to fight each other, with the winner claiming Marian. This is one of the most well-known hidden sequences in NES history and requires no special input to trigger; it activates automatically in any completed two-player run.

Stage Select Code

On the title screen, hold A + B on Controller 2, then press Start on Controller 1. This accesses a mission select screen allowing you to jump directly to Mission 1, 2, 3, or 4. Useful for practicing later missions without running a full playthrough.

Beneficial Glitches and Exploits

Screen Edge Push

Enemies that are knocked near the left or right edge of the screen can sometimes be pushed completely off, triggering a death without requiring a finishing blow. Walk into a stunned enemy toward the screen boundary repeatedly to force them off.

Cliff Knockout (Mission 2)

Mission 2 contains elevated platforms with drop-offs. Enemies knocked near the edge during their stagger animation will fall off without recovering — the fall itself counts as a kill and awards full points. The elbow smash aimed toward a ledge is the reliable setup for this.

Abobo Stun Loop

Large Abobo enemies enter a brief recovery state after being hit by a jump kick. A second jump kick landed immediately during recovery resets the stun, keeping Abobo in a permanent stunlock until defeated. Timing requires hitting on the first available frame of recovery, roughly as Abobo begins to stand.

Weapon Duplication

In areas where a bat or whip is on the ground, picking up a weapon and immediately dropping it by taking a hit in certain positions can cause the weapon to remain on the floor and become available again. This is inconsistent and position-dependent, but known to occur on Mission 2’s first enemy wave area.

No Password System

Double Dragon NES has no password or save system. The game is designed as a single-session experience across four missions. The stage select code (above) is the only built-in method to bypass earlier missions. Emulator save states are the modern equivalent for players who want to resume mid-game.

Developer Notes and Platform Differences

The NES version was developed separately from the arcade original by Technos and published by Tradewest. Several enemies and mechanics were altered or removed due to hardware limitations. The simultaneous two-player mode and the experience/move system are both NES-exclusive additions not present in the arcade release, and the final versus ending is a deliberate design choice by the NES development team rather than a secret in the traditional sense — though it surprised most players on first completion.
