Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Final Fantasy VI (1994).

Final Fantasy VI Cheats & Secrets

Final Fantasy VI has no traditional cheat codes but contains numerous secrets, optional characters, and legendary weapons.

Optional Characters: Mog, Gogo, and Umaro

Three characters are entirely optional:

Mog the Moogle: In the World of Balance, Mog can be recruited by NOT accepting Mog’s help during the Esper attack on Narshe. In the World of Ruin, Mog is found in the Narshe Mines. He can learn dances for various elemental effects.

Gogo the Mimic: Found inside a Boss creature called Zone Eater on Triangle Island (three days journey south of the Veldt in the World of Ruin). To reach Gogo, allow Zone Eater to swallow the entire party. Inside, navigate a series of chest rooms to find Gogo’s chamber. Gogo can mimic any command used by any party member.

Umaro the Sasquatch: Found in Narshe Mines in the World of Ruin, accessible after recruiting Mog. Umaro must be beaten in combat (he attacks; you must counter-damage him enough) and he is then recruited by Mog’s persuasion. Umaro cannot be controlled — he always fights automatically.

Legendary Items

Economizer (Gem Box): Makes all magic cost only 1 MP. Found rarely from Cactuars in the Floating Continent or as a rare steal from specific enemies. One of the most powerful items in the game.

Master’s Scroll: Causes the Attack command to hit four times instead of once. Doubles physical damage potential significantly when combined with strong weapons.

Illumina / Ragnarok: The Ragnarok Esper (found in Narshe’s Weapon Shop in the World of Ruin) can be used as an Esper (to learn Ultima magic) or transformed into the Illumina sword. The Illumina is one of the strongest weapons. The choice is permanent.

Sketch Bug (Japanese/Early US Versions)

In the original SNES cartridge versions (USA 1.0), using the Sketch command in certain circumstances caused a severe bug that could corrupt the save file, duplicating items or causing memory overflow. Specifically, sketching invisible or non-standard enemies could trigger the glitch. This was patched in later cartridge revisions. The Game Boy Advance version does not have this bug.

Practical use in unpatched versions: The Sketch glitch could be exploited to duplicate rare items. This is considered “cheating” but was an unintended feature of the original hardware.

Shadow’s Fate on the Floating Continent

During the escape from the Floating Continent, the game prompts players to “wait” if Shadow hasn’t joined yet. Shadow can be recruited here if you wait long enough. If you escape without him, Shadow dies and cannot be found in the World of Ruin.

This is the most common “permanent miss” in the game — players who don’t know to wait lose Shadow forever.

Sabin’s Blitz Commands

Sabin’s combat style uses fighting game-style button inputs. Blitz commands must be entered quickly:

BlitzInputEffect
PummelLeft, Left, AStrong physical hit
AuraBoltDown, Right, Left, ANon-elemental magic
SuplexLeft, Right, Left, Right, ASupplex any enemy (including Phantom Train)
Fire DanceLeft, Right, Down, Up, AFire damage
MantraRight, Left, Right, Left, AHeals the party
Air BladeUp, Down, Up, Down, AWind damage
SpiralerRight, Down, Right, Down, AMassive damage, Sabin faints
Bum RushLeft, Left, Right, Right, Left, Right, AMaximum physical damage

Note: The Phantom Train boss can actually be suplex’d with Sabin — one of gaming’s most famous optional interactions.

Terra’s Esper Ability

In specific battles when Terra has equipped an Esper and entered her Trance (Morph) state, her magic damage doubles. Managing when Terra morphs determines the efficiency of major boss fights.

100% Completion Checklist

  • All 14 party members (including 3 optional)
  • All Espers (20 total)
  • All 8 Legendary weapons/armor
  • Coliseum victories for all available prizes
  • All characters’ ultimate equipment
  • Ragnarok vs Illumina decision (choose one)
  • Gau’s Rage list (100+ enemy rages on the Veldt)

The Opera House

During the Opera sequence, you control Celes and must:

  1. Learn the lines (memorize the sequence before performing)
  2. Navigate the rafters to stop Ultros from dropping a 4-ton weight
  3. Defeat Ultros in combat

The performance lines (“Oh my hero, so far away now…”) must be entered correctly or Ultros drops the weight, and the sequence resets to the performance beginning.
