Final Fantasy VII Cheat Codes & Secrets
Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Final Fantasy VII (1997).
Secret & Optional Characters
Final Fantasy VII has two fully optional party members that are easy to miss entirely.
Yuffie Kisaragi
Yuffie appears as a random encounter in forested areas starting from the Junon region. After defeating her in battle, do not open the menu or walk away before speaking to her. Choose these dialogue options in sequence or she vanishes with your gil:
| Prompt | Correct Choice |
|---|---|
| Initial choice | ... |
| Second prompt | Petrified |
| Third prompt | Wait a second! |
| Fourth prompt | That's right |
| Final prompt | Let's hurry on |
Any wrong choice and Yuffie steals Gil and flees. She can be recruited as early as the Junon area forests or later in areas like the Corel region.
Vincent Valentine
- Obtain the Mansion Key from the safe in Shinra Mansion (Nibelheim). Safe combination: Right 36, Left 10, Right 59, Right 97. Defeating the Lost Number boss inside rewards the key plus the Cosmo Memory manual (Red XIII’s Level 4 Limit Break).
- Use the key to access the basement coffins.
- Speak to Vincent and exhaust all dialogue about Sephiroth and Lucrecia.
- Leave the room entirely, then immediately return and speak to him again.
- Vincent asks to be left alone — exit again, then re-enter. He joins the party.
If you leave Nibelheim without triggering this, Vincent remains permanently missable until your next playthrough.
Level 4 Limit Breaks (All Characters)
Each character has a hidden ultimate Limit Break obtained through specific sidequests, not level grinding.
| Character | Limit Break | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud | Omnislash | Purchase for 51,200 BP at Gold Saucer Battle Square (32,000 BP on Disc 1) |
| Barret | Catastrophe | Return to North Corel after saving it from the train; woman in house gives the manual |
| Tifa | Final Heaven | Play the piano in Tifa’s house in Nibelheim on Disc 2/3; requires correct notes from childhood memory |
| Aerith | Great Gospel | Give Mythril to the man in the Junon-area house; pick the small box on the left |
| Red XIII | Cosmo Memory | Inside the safe in Shinra Mansion (see Vincent section above) |
| Yuffie | All Creation | Defeat all five Wutai Pagoda bosses (Gorki, Shake, Chekhov, Staniv, Godo) |
| Cait Sith | Slots | Obtained automatically during story progression |
| Vincent | Chaos | Visit Lucrecia’s Waterfall Cave in a submarine with Vincent in party after accumulating 4+ hours of gameplay time with him; return twice |
| Cid | Highwind | Chest inside Rocket Town’s rocket before launch, or revisit afterward |
W-Item Duplication Glitch
The most powerful exploit in the game. Requires the W-Item materia (found in the Midgar subway tunnels during Disc 2).
In any battle:
- Select W-Item from the command menu
- Choose the item you want to duplicate and select a target to confirm the first use
- When the cursor moves to select your second item, highlight any item
- Press X to confirm a target for the second item
- Immediately press O (Cancel) before the animation plays
- The first item’s count increases by 1
- Repeat steps 4–5 as many times as needed
This works on all stackable consumables including Elixirs, Hero Drinks, Turbo Ethers, Megalixirs, and Hi-Potions. Duplicating Elixirs effectively gives infinite MP and full healing for the entire game. This glitch functions on original PS1 hardware with no cheat device required.
Chocobo Breeding & Hidden Materia Caves
Four Materia Caves are inaccessible without specific Chocobo types, and one contains the most powerful materia in the game.
Chocobo Types Required:
| Cave Location | Chocobo Needed | Materia Inside |
|---|---|---|
| Wutai Area | Blue or Green (river-crossing) | Mime |
| Mideel Area | Red or Black (mountain-crossing) | HP<->MP |
| Icicle Area | Blue or Green | Quadra Magic |
| Round Island (north of Ice Continent) | Gold only | Knights of the Round |
Gold Chocobo Breeding Path:
- Win a Wonderful Chocobo from the Icicle Inn area tracks
- Win a Good Chocobo from the Gold Saucer area tracks
- Breed them with a Carob Nut (stolen from Vlakorados near Cosmo Canyon) — aim for a Green or Blue Chocobo
- Win another Good/Great Chocobo; breed with Carob Nut for the other color
- Breed your Green + Blue with a Carob Nut for a Black Chocobo
- Win a Wonderful Chocobo; breed with Black using a Zeio Nut (stolen from Goblin enemies on Goblin Island, northeast area) for a Gold Chocobo
You must race each new Chocobo to at least Class B before breeding. Feed Sylkis Greens (bought from Chocobo Sage) to improve stats.
GameShark / Pro Action Replay Codes (PlayStation)
These codes require a GameShark or Pro Action Replay device for original PS1 hardware, or can be entered in the cheat menu of most PS1 emulators (ePSXe, PCSX2, DuckStation).
| Code | Effect |
|---|---|
8009A05C FFFF + 8009A05E 00FF | Max Gil (9,999,999) |
8009A060 FFFF | Max GP (Gold Saucer Points) |
80098080 0320 | Cloud Max HP (800) |
80098084 0320 | Cloud Max MP (800) |
8009A084 0063 | Cloud Level 99 |
80098068 FFFF | Cloud HP/MP always full |
800CE664 FFFF | All items × 99 in inventory |
80098158 00FF | Cloud all Limit Breaks learned |
Master Code (required with some GameShark versions): 800224D8 0000
Note: Confirm these codes against a trusted GameShark database before use on hardware, as memory addresses can vary between game revisions (SCUS-94163 vs. regional variants).
Battle Square Exploits
The Battle Square in Gold Saucer is the primary source of rare prizes including Omnislash and the W-Summon materia.
- Handicap manipulation: The slots that apply battle handicaps are seeded. Save before entering a round and reload to get favorable handicap spins (Missing Materia or low-impact penalties).
- Single Materia runs: Strip Cloud of all materia except one strong attack summon (Bahamut, Hades) before entering. Fewer materia slots mean fewer materia-removal handicaps can trigger.
- Turbo Ether stockpile: Enter with a Turbo Ether supply and W-Item already duplicated. MP depletion handicaps become irrelevant.
- Disc 1 priority: Cloud earns double BP on Disc 1 compared to Disc 2/3. Grinding Omnislash on Disc 1 is significantly more efficient.
Hidden Items & Critical Missables
| Item | Location | Missable? |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental Materia | Cave near Forgotten Capital | No |
| Bahamut ZERO Materia | Shinra Exhibit Hall (must examine the Tiny Bronco model after getting Neo Bahamut) | Yes — Disc 2 only |
| Contain Materia | Forgotten Capital | No |
| HP Shout (Barret’s ultimate weapon) | North Crater, Disc 2 | No |
| Missing Score (Barret weapon) | Gongaga reactor | Yes — missable after story passes |
| Broken Sword | Wutai, Godo’s house | No |
| Ribbon armor | Icicle Inn area (drop from Iguana enemies) or Battle Square prize | No |
| Enemy Skill: Toad Song | Must be hit by the Frog enemy in Gaea’s Cliff | Learnable only from one enemy type |
| Teach (enemy skill) | Land Worm enemy | No |
Developer Easter Eggs & Hidden Content
Honeybee Inn Scene: In the Wall Market during Disc 1, Cloud can enter the Honeybee Inn for a bathing/crossdressing scene that varies based on choices made earlier. The Bee Girl room contains suggestive developer humor cut down from the Japanese original.
Cloud’s Crossdressing: To infiltrate Don Corneo’s mansion, Cloud undergoes a full makeover. The quality of the wig, dress, cologne, and tiara determines whether Don Corneo picks Cloud — and unlocks slightly different dialogue. Getting picked requires the best of each item: Silk Dress (from the Dressmaker with the right item), Diamond Tiara, and Sexy Cologne.
Turtle’s Paradise Flyers: Six flyers posted around the world advertise a bar called Turtle’s Paradise in Wutai. Finding all six earns prizes from the bartender: a Megalixir, a Shinra Alpha armor, and other items. Flyer locations span from Sector 5 slums to Cosmo Canyon.
Cait Sith’s Useless Limit Break: Slots (Cait Sith’s only Limit Break) has a hidden outcome: landing three Cait Sith faces in a row triggers Game Over — killing your entire party instantly regardless of HP. It’s intentional.
Debug/Test Room (PC Version): The PC version of FF7 contains a leftover debug room in the game data accessible via memory editing. It includes test NPCs, all teleport options, and battle configuration tools used during development. Not accessible on PS1 without hardware modification.
The “Aerith Lives” Myth: There is no legitimate in-game method to prevent Aerith’s death. Aerith’s Great Gospel Limit Break can be obtained before the event, and her ghost appears in the Forgotten Capital — these are intentional design choices, not triggers for resurrection. All widely circulated “revival” codes for PS1 lead to corrupted saves or softlocks.
Beneficial Glitches & Exploits
Back Attack Yuffie Glitch: If Yuffie’s random encounter triggers as a back attack, the post-battle recruitment dialogue still appears. Choosing correctly still recruits her — the back attack flag doesn’t block it.
Enemy Skill: Beta Early: The Midgar Zolom snake enemy (the one that impales a former SOLDIER on a tree) can teach the Beta enemy skill if Cloud survives the fire breath. Beta deals massive fire damage and is obtainable before leaving the Grasslands area by carefully managing HP — equip a character with Enemy Skill materia, get hit, have another character use a Phoenix Down if they die. This makes the early game significantly easier.
Vincent Skip: You can complete the Nibelheim section without Vincent, return after the Rocket Town sequence, and still recruit him before the Northern Crater descent. His quest is not strictly time-gated to Nibelheim.
Materia Equip Trick in Fort Condor: The Fort Condor mini-game units inherit the stats of the characters you battle with. Temporarily equipping materia that inflates stats before the commander pays off increases the strength of your defending units.
Master Materia from Kalm Traveler: Complete the Underwater and Desert sidequests (Emerald and Ruby Weapon drops or Submarine Ocean floor) and give the Traveler in Kalm the Guidebook (dropped by Ghost Ship), Earth Harp (Emerald Weapon), and Desert Rose (Ruby Weapon). He rewards you with Master Magic, Master Command, and Master Summon materia — single materia that replicate every spell, command, and summon in the game simultaneously.
