Soft Reset
Hold L + R + Start + Select simultaneously to soft reset the game without powering off the console. This is essential for:
- Re-rolling shiny Pokemon encounters on legendary fights
- Resetting after failed Master Ball throws
- Restarting from your last save point quickly
This works on original GBA hardware, GBA SP, Game Boy Player, and all standard emulators.
Secret Areas & Unlockables
Mirage Island
Mirage Island appears on Route 130 (between Pacifidlog Town and Slateport) with a 1-in-65,536 probability each day. The game checks the last two bytes of your lead Pokemon’s personality value against a hidden daily value. When they match, the island appears.
- Contains wild Wynaut at high levels
- Holds the Leichi Berry, unobtainable anywhere else in the game
- The old man in Pacifidlog Town tells you whether it is visible that day
- To improve odds: deposit lead Pokemon, withdraw others, check the old man repeatedly
Southern Island (Latias)
Latias roams Hoenn in Ruby as a random encounter. To access Southern Island and obtain the other Eon Pokemon:
- Requires the Eon Ticket (distributed via Nintendo Mystery Gift events or e-Reader in Japan)
- Show the ticket to the sailor in Slateport’s harbor
- Southern Island contains Latios (level 50) in Ruby, Latias in Sapphire
Regi Trio Locations
The Braille puzzles unlock all three Regis. Sequence:
- Regirock — Desert Ruins, Route 111. Read Braille, then: go Right 2, Down 2, use Strength
- Regice — Island Cave, Route 105. Read Braille, wait 2 minutes without moving
- Registeel — Ancient Tomb, Route 120. Read Braille, stand in the center, use Fly
All three must be caught to unlock access, though you do not need them in your party simultaneously.
Sky Pillar — Rayquaza
Sky Pillar on Route 131 requires the Mach Bike to ascend the crumbling floor tiles. Without it you fall through before reaching the top floor where Rayquaza (level 70) awaits. Save before engaging — it has only one encounter.
Exploits & Glitches
Pomeg Berry Glitch
The Pomeg Berry reduces HP EVs by 10. If a Pokemon has very low HP EVs (less than 10), using the berry causes the HP stat to underflow, displaying as a large number or zero. A Pokemon at exactly 1 HP sent into battle with 0 displayed HP creates an “empty party” state.
Effect: Allows a fainted Pokemon to be sent into battle. The battle system reads the party as having no valid Pokemon and behaves unpredictably — walking through areas normally locked behind story flags is the most commonly exploited result.
PC Box Cloning Glitch
This requires careful timing during the save process:
- Deposit the Pokemon you want to clone into any PC box
- Select Move Pokemon and move it to a different box
- Immediately after the “Saving… Do not turn off the power” screen begins, hold the power button to cut power mid-save
- Restart the game — if timed correctly, the Pokemon exists in both your party and the box
This is unreliable and risks save file corruption. Back up your save before attempting.
Infinite Repel Trick
Using a Repel and immediately using another before it expires does not reset the step counter — it stacks additively. Chain multiple Max Repels to travel long distances with zero wild encounters without wasting items.
Feebas Tile Manipulation
Feebas only appears on 6 specific water tiles in Route 119, determined by a seed tied to the Today’s Trendy Phrase in Dewford Town. Changing the phrase resets which 6 tiles are active.
- Systematically fish every tile with an Old or Good Rod
- When you find a Feebas tile, all 6 tend to cluster in the same general area
- Changing the Trendy Phrase reassigns tiles, so do not change it while searching
Developer Easter Eggs & Hidden Content
Braille Alphabet Messages
The game uses the real Braille alphabet throughout Sealed Chamber and the Regi dungeons. Translating the dots reveals actual readable messages — for example, the Sealed Chamber entrance reads: “STOP AND READ THIS. THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW ME, THE FIRST POKEMON, SHALL NOT OPEN DOORS.”
Hall of Fame Credits Curiosity
After entering the Hall of Fame, the congratulations sequence stores a snapshot of your champion team in a special save block. Each time you defeat the Elite Four, the game logs the new team alongside the previous records — the internal data functions as a rolling developer-visible timestamp of player progress.
Lilycove Museum’s “Secret Painting”
The Lilycove Museum on the second floor has a painting described only as “It’s a mysterious painting…” — it changes slightly based on how many of your Pokemon have ribbons from the Contest Hall. Maxing out Super Rank ribbons on multiple Pokemon reveals the full artwork description.
Wild Pokemon Oddity: Hex 0000
On emulators without the correct ROM region, encountering a Pokemon via walk-through-walls in glitch areas can trigger species index 0 — a blank, broken entry that crashes the battle system. This is an internal developer null-check artifact, not present in normal gameplay.
Contest & Condition Shortcuts
| Trick | Method |
|---|---|
| Max Beauty fast (for Feebas) | Feed Pamtre Berries blended at level 25+ smoothness |
| Reset condition | Use Kelpsy/Hondew/Grepa/Qualot/Tomato Berries to reduce stats and re-feed |
| EV-clear for competitive | Pomeg (HP), Kelpsy (Atk), Hondew (SpAtk), Grepa (SpDef), Qualot (Def), Tamato (Speed) |
| Clone ribbons via link | Contest ribbons are stored on the Pokemon and transfer with them to any game that recognizes them |
Event Items (No Longer Officially Distributed)
These items were distributed via Nintendo events and are unobtainable through normal retail play today. They can be applied via Action Replay:
| Item | Code | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Eon Ticket | 82005274 0110 | Southern Island + opposite Eon Pokemon |
| Old Sea Map | 82005274 0178 | Faraway Island (Mew, level 30) |
| Aurora Ticket | 82005274 016F | Birth Island (Deoxys, level 30) |
| Mystic Ticket | 82005274 0176 | Navel Rock (Ho-Oh & Lugia) |
