Overview
Twenty-six characters. Three modes each. The Alpha 3 roster is where Street Fighter’s mid-1990s character pool finally assembled completely.
Zangief in Alpha. Blanka in Alpha. Dhalsim in Alpha. The Street Fighter II characters who hadn’t appeared in the Alpha timeline arrived together, filling gaps that Alpha 1 and 2 left visible.
The Isms
Three combat modes per character. A-ism is what Alpha 2 players expect — three-level super combo meter, the Alpha standard. X-ism is power mode — biggest damage, no air blocking, one super level. V-ism is the customization mode — shadow copies that mirror the player character’s attacks simultaneously.
V-ism became the competitive mode. The custom combos from V-ism created sequences of damage that other modes couldn’t match. But A-ism rewards Alpha experience; X-ism creates pure power players. Three different games inside the same match depending on who selected what.
The Ism system tripled the strategic complexity without adding characters. Ryu in A-ism versus Ryu in V-ism versus Ryu in X-ism are three different fights.
World Tour
The fighting game with an RPG mode. World Tour gave Alpha 3 a campaign structure — fight through opponents across world regions, spend points to learn their moves.
Accumulating Zangief’s Spinning Piledriver on Ryu. Teaching the character moves they shouldn’t know. The customization system was novel and genuinely interesting rather than superficial. Players who engaged with World Tour found a different way through the game than arcade mode provided.
Completing the Alpha
Alpha 3 is where the trilogy finished. The roster assembled, the mechanics refined, the World Tour mode providing single-player content beyond arcade repetition.
Players who found their entry point at Alpha 3 rarely went back to Alpha 1. The earlier entries showed the evolution; Alpha 3 showed where the evolution led.
Our Review
Gameplay
Street Fighter Alpha 3 is a six-button fighting game with the largest roster in the Alpha series: 26 characters including classic Street Fighter (Ryu, Ken, Guile, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, Bison, Zangief, Blanka, Dhalsim), Alpha originals (Karin, Rainbow Mika, Cody, Guy, Adon), and guest appearances. Three combat modes (Isms) selectable per character: A-ism (standard three-level super combo system from Alpha 2), V-ism (custom combo with shadow copies), X-ism (single-level powerful super but no air blocking). World Tour mode provides a single-player campaign where characters can learn moves from any other character through sparring. Guard break system and other Alpha series mechanics remain. The PS1 version is considered one of the finest ports of the era.
Graphics
Street Fighter Alpha 3's anime-style sprite work on PS1 delivers smooth character animation. The character roster's visual variety across classic and Alpha-specific designs creates a cohesive yet diverse visual presentation.
Audio
Street Fighter Alpha 3 features character-specific stage themes adapted from various Street Fighter games and new Alpha compositions. The voice acting and sound effects maintain series standards.
Replayability
26-character roster with three combat modes per character and World Tour mode create enormous replay depth. The Ism system means each character effectively has three different versions. Competitive two-player is the primary ongoing engagement.
Historical Significance
Street Fighter Alpha 3 (1998 arcade; 1999 PS1) completed the Alpha trilogy and is often considered the series' peak within that sub-franchise. The 26-character roster assembled classic Street Fighter characters absent from Alpha 2 (Blanka, Zangief, Dhalsim, Balrog, Vega, Sagat) alongside the Alpha-specific cast for the most complete roster in the series until Street Fighter IV. The World Tour mode was innovative for fighting games — a story mode with RPG progression. Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper (GBA, 2002) and Hyper (PSP, 2006) provided enhanced portable versions.
