Hidden Speed Mode: Star Speeds 9 and 10
The game’s speed settings go from 1-10 in the standard menu. Stars represent speed. To access stars 9 and 10 (maximum speed, much faster than the displayed maximum):
- Hold L + R simultaneously while moving the cursor on the difficulty/speed selection screen
- Speed indicators show more stars than the standard menu allows
At speed 10, the game moves at a pace that even experienced players find challenging to react to.
Same-Character Matches
Street Fighter II Turbo allows two players to use the same character in VS mode, unlike the original Street Fighter II World Warriors edition. Simply select the same character as your opponent — both players will be the same character with no additional input required.
Playing as All Four Bosses
Unlike the original SFII, all four boss characters — Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison — are fully playable in all modes in Turbo. To access them:
- Move the cursor to the empty spaces at the bottom of the character select screen
- Press any button to select them
All four have full moves, endings, and can be used in the regular tournament mode.

Throw Techniques
Throws are performed by pressing Forward or Back + Strong Punch (or Strong Kick for some characters) when adjacent to an opponent. Throws cannot be blocked — proximity is required. Each character has at least one throw; Zangief has the devastating Spinning Piledriver.
Counter-Attack Windows
Street Fighter II Turbo operates on frame-based timing. “Safe” moves end in recovery frames where the opponent cannot counter. Learning which moves leave recovery time and which are “unsafe on block” is the foundation of competitive play. The Shoryuken, for example, is a powerful anti-air but extremely unsafe when blocked — knowledgeable opponents will punish it with a full combo.
2-Player Mode Tips
- Focus on the neutral game: positioning and footsies (managing the spacing advantage) determine which character’s moves are effective
- Zangief’s 360 inputs can be buffered during jumps and crouches — he can Pile Driver on landing
- Guile’s “Handcuffs” strategy (walking slowly while charging) is the foundation of his game
- Chun-Li’s crouching medium kick is one of the best footsie tools in the game at medium range
