Secret Skater: Private Carrera
Available on PlayStation. Complete the full career mode with all default characters to unlock Private Carrera, a female military-themed skater.
900 Combo Achievement
On the Downhill Jam or large halfpipe stages, building a high enough special meter and performing the 900 trick requires:
- Build special meter to full (fill the yellow “Special” bar)
- Gain high speed into a halfpipe
- Hit the trick inputs at the peak of a large air
Tony Hawk’s 900 is mapped to: hold Square + Triangle (PlayStation). This is the only character who can perform a 900, reflecting his real-world achievement at the 1999 X Games.
High Score Strategy: COMBO Linking
The key to high scores in THPS1 is combo linking through grinds and manuals. Since THPS1 doesn’t have manuals, grind tricks are the primary combo extender:
- Build speed with speed powerups and pumping transitions
- Hit a grind on a long rail or ledge
- Revert at the end of the grind and chain to the next trick
- Link to another grind immediately
Warehouse tips:
- The long central rail gives the most grind combo potential
- Speed pickup at the start gives necessary velocity
- The quarter pipes allow large air combos after speed buildup
Secret Tape Locations
Each level has a hidden tape collectible in a hard-to-reach location:
- Warehouse: On top of the highest platform, requires launching off a half-pipe at full speed
- School: On a ledge above the fountain area, accessible by ramp grinding
- Mall: Hidden in the upper floor accessible via a ramp near the food court entrance
- Skate Park: Above the large central half-pipe — requires a massive air from the main ramp
- Downtown: On a fire escape ledge accessible only from the building’s roof ramp
- Downhill Jam: Midway down the course on a narrow ledge along the right side wall
- Burnside: Above the large overhead ramp, accessible via transfer to the highest platform
- San Francisco: On the roof of a building alongside the trolley track
SKATE Letters
Each level contains the five letters S-K-A-T-E scattered around the environment. Collecting all five in a single run counts as one goal completion per level.
Tips:
- Plan a circuit route that naturally passes each letter
- Some letters require specific tricks to access (the A in Warehouse is in the air over the half-pipe)
- Missing one letter means finishing the run and starting again — you cannot collect partial sets across separate runs
Combo Tips for High Score
| Trick Sequence | Approximate Score |
|---|---|
| 720 + Heelflip | ~3,000 |
| 900 (Tony Hawk only) | ~10,000 |
| Nosegrind across full rail | ~2,000 |
| Kickflip + 5-0 grind + trick out | ~5,000 |
Multipliers increase with each additional trick in a combo: a 4-trick combo scores 4x the base value.
