Diddy Kong Racing Cheat Codes & Secrets

Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Diddy Kong Racing (1997).

Cheat Codes

Diddy Kong Racing uses a letter-based cheat entry system rather than button sequences. From the main menu, navigate to Options → Enter Cheat and spell out the code using the analog stick to cycle through letters and A to confirm each one. Codes are not case-sensitive. A chime confirms a valid entry; an error tone means the code was rejected.

Secret Unlockable Characters

The base roster includes Diddy Kong, Tiptup, Pipsy, Timber, Bumper, Conker, Krunch, and Banjo. Two additional characters are hidden behind in-game challenges.

Drumstick (Rooster)

Drumstick was disqualified from the original race lineup and is disguised as a frog on Timber’s Island.

  1. Complete Adventure Mode far enough to have all 8 base characters available and collected all four Wizpig Amulet pieces.
  2. Return to the overworld hub (Timber’s Island).
  3. Near the lighthouse, locate the two large frogs sitting in the grass.
  4. Drive your vehicle directly over both frogs. They will transform, revealing Drumstick as a selectable character.

Drumstick has strong top speed and is one of the fastest characters in the game, making the unlock well worth pursuing.

T.T. (Timer Trophy)

T.T. is the floating stopwatch who sets time trial ghost records on every course.

  1. Set a time on any course to make T.T.’s ghost appear.
  2. Beat T.T.’s ghost time on every single course in the game, including Future Fun Land tracks.
  3. Once all times are beaten, T.T. becomes selectable from the character screen.

T.T. has exceptional speed stats and is widely considered the best competitive character once unlocked.

Unlocking Future Fun Land (World 5)

Future Fun Land, the game’s secret fifth world, is not accessible from the start.

  1. Win all four trophy races across Dino Domain, Snowflake Mountain, Sherbet Island, and Spooky Valley.
  2. Collect all four Wizpig Amulet pieces by defeating each world’s boss in the rematch challenge.
  3. Defeat Wizpig in the first boss race on the main island.
  4. The rocket on Timber’s Island activates, launching you to Future Fun Land.

Future Fun Land contains four tracks: Spacedust Alley, Darkmoon Caverns, Spaceport Alpha, and Star City. Completing these and defeating Wizpig a second time triggers the true ending.

Wish Keys and Locked Doors

Each of the four world bosses (Tricky the Triceratops, Bluey the Walrus, Bubbler the Octopus, Smokey the Dragon) drops a Wish Key when defeated in the boss rematch race.

  • The four Wish Keys unlock four doors hidden around Timber’s Island.
  • Each door contains a bonus challenge or shortcut within the hub world itself.
  • Collecting all four keys is required to fully complete the game at 100%.

Silver Coin Challenges

Each of the 20 standard courses has a Silver Coin variant that places 8 silver coins throughout the track. You must collect all 8 coins and finish in first place simultaneously.

  • Silver Coin challenges unlock boss rematch races, which are the only source of Wish Keys.
  • Coins respawn each attempt if you fail, so there is no penalty for missing them.
  • Hovercraft and plane courses have coins placed in harder-to-reach locations, often requiring knowledge of the track’s off-road shortcuts.

Developer Easter Egg

Entering the cheat code WHODIDTHIS from the Options menu triggers a developer credits sequence, crediting the Rare team responsible for building the game. This is one of several Rare games from this era to include a hidden credits Easter egg accessible via cheat code rather than normal game completion.

Beneficial Glitches and Exploits

Boost Start

On any race countdown, press and hold A precisely as the “2” finishes and the “1” appears. A correctly timed boost start launches you off the line faster than normal acceleration. The timing window is tight but consistent with practice.

Hovercraft Speed Glitch (Crescent Island)

In Crescent Island, the hovercraft’s physics allow you to skip a significant curve on the second loop by cutting diagonally across the shallow beach area on the right side. Because the hovercraft does not lose speed on non-road surfaces, this shortcut saves several seconds and is viable in Time Trial mode.

Zipper Stacking

Collecting a red missile balloon (level 3) while passing over a speed zipper simultaneously applies both the weapon pickup animation and the zipper boost. In certain track layouts, chaining zippers while holding a weapon balloon prevents the normal slowdown that follows a zipper, maintaining maximum speed through a sequence.

Plane Vertical Exploits

In the two plane-based worlds (Sherbet Island and Future Fun Land), the aircraft has a vertical ceiling but no enforced lower bound on most tracks. In Spaceport Alpha, flying very low through the tunnel segments while maintaining a dive angle can bypass portions of the intended course geometry, reducing lap time noticeably.

T.T. Ghost Phase-Through

In Time Trial mode, T.T.’s ghost is a visual-only entity with no collision. You can drive directly through it with no effect, which is worth noting since newer players sometimes avoid the ghost and lose racing line efficiency in the process.

Multiplayer Notes

  • DOUBLEVISION must be entered before entering the multiplayer character select screen to take effect.
  • JOINTVENTURE for 2-player Adventure Mode is the most impactful cheat in the game for co-op players, as Adventure Mode is otherwise locked to single-player.
  • Battle Mode arenas are unlocked progressively as you advance through Adventure Mode — there is no cheat code to unlock them all simultaneously.
